Pack it up with Woola… a very woolly welcome to our new client!

Woola bubble wrap envelopes made of wool against a pink background.

Bubble wrap is made from polyethylene that takes more than 500 years to decompose in landfills (or worst—in nature)! In the past decade, the global packaging industry has experienced strong growth, driven by e-commerce companies that need to ship their products to their customers. These companies are slowly becoming more committed to using better environmental and sustainable options. Despite this, packaging that contains plastic is too often the easiest choice.

A company that knows this all too well and is taking action to address this problem in the packaging industry is Woola. This company, which is committed to finding sustainable solutions, and wants to make the world a little greener, came knocking on our door in mid-November. Together, through various media outlets, we aim to raise their visibility among e-commerce and retail businesses in the DACH region, showcasing their potential to clean up the packaging industry. Say hello to our new client, Woola!

The problem: The detrimental impact of plastic on climate change

In theory, plastic may be a convenient packaging material. The material is durable, lightweight, low cost, and (usually) recyclable. However, in practice, there is one major problem: plastic plays a significant role in the emissions that cause climate change. According to Bloomberg, in the 1950s, the world produced 2 million metric tons of the stuff annually. Now the amount has risen to more than 400 million metric tons! Not to mention, plastic ends up in our oceans, rivers, canals, and lakes.  Plastic is affecting our ecosystems, health, wildlife, and economy. Microplastics are even found in us.

Woola states, “Human activity adds to the natural greenhouse effect, causing the earth’s temperature to rise. It’s a fact. The primary source of man-made CO2 emissions? Burning fossil fuels. Yet many industries depend heavily on fossil fuels—including the packaging industry.”

Woolsome packaging solutions

Woola currently offers three products: the Wool Envelope, the Bottle Sleeve, and the Bubble Wool. All these products offer sustainable and safe wrapping solutions for cosmetic, jewelry, electronics, and other industries. Firstly, the Wool Envelopes (as shown above) have an inner layer made of wool. This provides protection for fragile items, water repellence, and insulation against extreme temperatures. Secondly, the Bottle Sleeves made of wool protect glass bottles on their journey. And lastly, the Bubble Wool, which companies can use to wrap bulky items in, protect items from breaking or getting scratched.

Showing the DACH region the Woola Experience event!

Woola came to us with the goal to increase their visibility, awareness and brand recognition in the German market through an original launch event—the Woola Experience. Given that we, Laika Space Dogs, are always up for a sustainable challenge, and have been working with logistic players such as Liefergrün and packaging solutions providers such as Packhelp, we soon saw that both our company stars were aligned. As a result, we are now supporting Woola with a three-month strategic project that will include event PR, general PR, and developing content to launch the Woola Experience—the goal is to enable e-commerce and mail-order companies to switch to sustainable packaging products.

We are more than happy to do our bit to show different industries sustainable packaging solutions and options. We’re looking forward to supporting Woola, and bring attention to their important mission to cut 50% of global fossil fuel based bubble wrap usage by 2030. It’s definitely a mission we can get behind. A really woolly warm welcome to our new client, Woola!
