Belgian intern Isabelle reporting for space duty

Hold on space travelers... get ready for a launch at a speed of 8 kilometers per second. Like my internship at Laika, this will be an intense, powerful start. Are you as excited as me?

Before take off, I felt a little stressed, but in a positive way, yet the moment I took my first step aboard the spaceship, it only took a warm hello from the office manager, Malte, to make me feel welcomed by the Laika space crew. Being part of a diverse team with a wide range of knowledge has allowed me to broaden my horizons. It’s already been over a month since I first became part of the crew, and I'm thrilled to represent myself as a 20-year-old Belgian crew member.

The world through my eyes

My parents always told me to go after my dreams. Not surprisingly, I’m dedicated to working hard and turning my ambitions into reality. Ever since I was young, I have been passionate about reading books and writing stories—this gives me a feeling of freedom. Something else that gives me the same type of pleasure and inspiration is being outside—in the fresh air— while spending time with my family and friends. Or strolling outside here in Berlin, and enjoying the beautiful street art.

I'm currently studying International Communication. Before finishing my bachelor’s degree, I wanted to gain experience in the field of corporate communications and issues management. Gaining insight into a PR agency's perspective in the media and communications field has been an eye-opening experience. Putting my theoretical knowledge into practice is not as easy as it seems. Luckily, the Laika crew guides me through the work and helps me find my personal course. I really enjoy the comms cosmos and can’t wait to expand my knowledge and skills during the next three months.

Becoming a Laika Space Dog

While searching for an internship, I got in contact with my classmate Linde, a former intern on the spaceship. She confirmed my positive feelings about Laika, and so I applied. During my short time on board, I already learned a lot of new things. I got in touch with international clients, did some content creation—which I really enjoyed, and delved deeper into researching specific industries, such as fintech and hospitality.

There are two main reasons why the experience I gained during my time in Berlin will stay with me for life…. On a career level—this is my first adventure in the work field. I'm eager to learn new skills and looking forward to transforming theory into practice. Secondly, I'm grateful for the opportunity to enjoy life abroad, to become more independent, to satisfy my curiosity about the world while getting to know other space travelers with different backgrounds.

My current mission? Challenge myself to get the best out of my internship, to keep on learning and improving, and to enjoy my time in space. As they say, “time flies.” At this moment my destination is the Laikaverse, but who knows where it will be in the future? Mars… Venus?

One thing’s for sure though, I fully intend to enjoy the journey.
