Narayan and Laika to make a buzz with Vegan Ohney

Berlin, where the Laika spaceship is based, is consistently ranked among the most vegan cities in Europe, containing some of the world’s very finest vegan food. Additionally, plant-based options have seen a 17% year-on-year production increase in 2021. The sector has seen some truly incredible innovation over the past couple of decades, and sustainable food experts Narayan have continued that trend. 

Imagine all the sweet goodness of honey, but made more ethically and sustainably! That’s what Narayan, in partnership with a US-based start-up MeliBio, have crafted. That’s why we at Laika are happy to announce Narayan—launching the World’s First Plant-Based Ohney: Better Foodie Ohney—as the newest quest partner in the Laikaverse!

With the same sweet taste and texture, as well as all the nutritional and health benefits as bee-made honey, Ohney is free of seasonal volatility and pesticides. Narayan’s goal is to make people aware that there is a vegan Ohney created with only clean label ingredients, free from syrups or additives, as well as one that has respect for crops, people, and the planet, not to mention bees. They aim to produce high quality and low impact products that can be traced throughout the supply-chain.

But why is vegan Ohney actually needed, I hear you ask? Bee-made honey is tasty and good for you, right? But actually, there are also numerous advantages to plant-based Ohney.

Environmental impact 

Despite what many may assume, modern farmed honeybees don’t actually help the environment. In fact, the latest evidence suggests that farmed bees actually harm the environment, since they aren’t as good at pollinating as wild bees, but still require all the same resources to do it, making it all that much harder for wild bees to do their thing.

"Considering that there are new solutions for pollination and that bee colonies continue to be threatened by pathogens and climate change, it's time to make a change," states Mario Brumat, founder and CEO of Narayan Foods.

Ethical reasons 

Bees are smart. Like, really smart. They’re so smart, they’re even moody (on occasion). Honey isn’t typically made with bees’ interests at heart, so why clip their wings? Better Foodie Vegan Ohney lets us enjoy all the goodness of bee-made honey, without pestering any bees.
